Bake, learn, and celebrate Easter traditions with our hands-on Hot Cross Bun School Experience!
Easter Traditions Brought to Life
Easter is a time for celebration, tradition, and of course—delicious treats! One of the most iconic Easter bakes is the hot cross bun, a lightly spiced, fruity bread roll marked with a cross and traditionally enjoyed on Good Friday. This Easter, we’re bringing this historic and tasty tradition to the classroom with our Hot Cross Bun School Experience!

A Hands-On Learning Experience
Baking is a fantastic way to engage pupils in a fun, interactive, and educational activity that incorporates maths, science, and history—all while creating something truly delicious! Our Easter baking session allows children to get hands-on in the kitchen, weighing, mixing, kneading, and baking their very own hot cross buns from scratch.
Measuring, Mixing, and Kneading
Pupils will start by measuring key ingredients such as flour, sugar, yeast, and a fragrant mix of cinnamon and spices before carefully combining them with warm milk and melted butter. This process introduces them to basic baking science, understanding how yeast helps dough rise and how different ingredients work together to create the perfect texture.
Next, they will whisk an egg and mix everything together, watching as their dough takes shape. Once combined, it’s time for the fun (and slightly messy!) part—kneading the dough until it becomes soft and smooth.
The Magic of Dough Rising!
While waiting for the dough to rise, pupils will get to explore another key ingredient—flavour! They’ll zest a fresh orange and carefully weigh out juicy sultanas and mixed peel, learning about the different elements that give hot cross buns their signature taste. Once the dough has doubled in size, they’ll knead these fruity bursts into it, watching how the texture changes with each addition.
After that, the dough is divided into eight equal portions, shaped into neat balls, and arranged on a baking tray. A gentle pat-down ensures the buns will bake evenly. Then, before they go into the oven, pupils will prepare a simple flour and water paste to pipe on the iconic cross—a traditional mark that dates back centuries.
Baking to Perfection
With the buns in the oven, the classroom will soon be filled with the warm, comforting aroma of Easter baking. In just 15–20 minutes, the golden, fluffy buns will be ready to take out and finish with a glossy sugar syrup glaze, adding that final touch of sweetness and shine.

Bringing Easter Traditions to Life
More than just a baking session, this experience helps pupils connect with Easter traditions and the history of hot cross buns, all while learning important life skills. From maths and measurements to patience and teamwork, this hands-on activity is an engaging way to celebrate the season in a memorable (and tasty!) way.
